Introduction
In this article, I’m going to give you a list of the best American metal roofing manufacturers based on:
- My own professional experience with metal roofing over the years
- The companies’ reputations within the roofing industry
- Feedback from property managers and homeowners
- The research I’ve done to confirm it all
The focus here is on companies that manufacture steel and aluminum roof systems.
Over 90% of metal roofing is made from steel or aluminum, with steel products alone making up over 80%. Copper, zinc, and stainless steel are also used and they make excellent roofing materials, but it doesn’t make sense to include the smaller companies that specialize in those materials here. Stainless steel is a very niche roofing material. Copper roofing is commonly custom made or the panels are formed on site from copper metal roofing coil produced by a copper rolling mill company like Revere Copper. Almost all zinc roofing in America is imported from Europe, produced either by RheinZink or VMZink (both fine companies).
A Word About the Metal Roofing Industry
Pretty much anyone with a roll-forming machine can make metal roofing. China pumps this stuff out by the boatload, and it’s relatively easy to set up shop as a reseller. There are probably thousands of smaller companies across North America selling metal roofing products. Most of them don’t have full quality control over the manufacturing process themselves. They often buy painted coil stock from whoever’s cheapest, form the panels in a rented warehouse, and put their name on the final product.
The problem is, the quality of the finished product is only as good as the materials, equipment, and process behind it. Cheap coatings can fade and flake fast (I’ve seen this happen a lot). Thin panels dent easily and often develop oil-canning. Low standards during manufacturing can turn into big problems later with fastener and seam performance. And once the roof is installed, there’s no easy way to fix it, especially if the company disappears in a few years and the warranty turns out to be worthless.
It’s important to choose a brand with a good reputation for high quality products, a history of product performance that goes back farther than one roof life cyle (preferably more than 40 years), and a track record of honoring warranties. The best metal roofing manufacturers invest in testing, offer certified installer programs, and back their products with relatively long-term, non-prorated warranties. If you’re making a 50- or 60-year roofing decision, you want to be confident that the manufacturer will actually be around if something goes wrong in the future.
You may pay a little more for high-quality materials, but in the case of metal roofing, it’s absolutely worth it.
Criteria for High-Quality Metal Roofing
Not all metal roofs are created equal. Here’s how to tell if a roofing system is likely to perform the way you want:
1. Durable Panel Thickness
- What it means: Thicker sheet metal resists denting, oil canning (surface waviness), and structural movement better than thinner sheet metal.
- What to look for: Steel panels should be at least 26 gauge; 24 gauge is better. Aluminum panels should be at least .032 inches thick.
2. Premium Paint Finishes
- What it means: A high quality finish protects the roof from fading, chalking, and peeling for decades.
- What to look for: Coatings made with PVDF resin (like Kynar 500®). SMP (Silicone Modified Polyester) and other paints do not perform as well as PVDF (although they do cost significantly less).
- Coating Warranty Coverage: Top manufacturers back their finishes with long-term protection, typically a 30- to 40-year warranty against fading, chalking, and film failure (peeling off).
3. Metal Substrate Quality
- What it means: The type of metal beneath the coating determines how well the roof resists rust and corrosion over time.
- What to look for: Panels made from Galvalume®-coated steel or aluminum, both of which offer exceptional durability in harsh environments. High-quality galvanized steel may be fine. Watch out for low-quality galvanized steel; it will have reduced corrosion resistance, especially at cut edges and fastener holes.
4. Rigorous Manufacturing Standards
- What it means: High-end manufacturers follow strict production tolerances that ensure every panel performs as intended, structurally, visually, and for the long term.
- What to look for: Clean, consistent panel seams, uniform dimensions, and smooth surfaces with minimal waviness. These qualities reflect precise roll-forming, quality control, and investment in high quality equipment and maintenance.
5. Strong Warranty Coverage
- What it means: The manufacturer stands behind the product and has confidence that it will perform well for at minimum as long as they promise it will.
- What to look for: At least a 30-year finish warranty, a 20-year non-prorated period for material defects, and the ability to transfer the warranty to a new owner.
6. Installer Training or Certification
- What it means: The roof system is more likely to be installed correctly (which is critical to performance).
- What to look for: Brands that offer certified installer programs or require contractor training in order issue weathertightness warranties.
7. Verified Product Testing
- What it means: The roofing system will meet performance standards for wind, impact, fire, and weather resistance.
- What to look for: Products rated for UL 2218 Class 4 impact, ASTM E1592 uplift, and Class A fire resistance, especially for insurance rebates or certain building code compliance issues.
Metal Roofing Terms
Here’s an explanation of some of the specialized terms used in the company profiles below:
- Batten Seam Roof: A traditional metal roofing style where the panel edges are folded over strips of solid material (typically wood) which are fastened to the structural deck. Battens are typically 1.5 or 2 inches square in cross-section. Common in historic or decorative designs.
- Coping: A protective cover placed along the top of a parapet or other wall to prevent water from entering the building envelope.
- Cool Roof: A roof designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, helping reduce indoor cooling costs.
- Exposed-Fastener Panels: Metal roofing panels attached with visible screws. Common on lower-cost houses and utility buildings; typically more affordable than concealed systems.
- Fade and Chalk Resistance: Describes how well a roof’s color and surface hold up to sun exposure. “Fade” means color loss; “chalking” is a white powdery film.
- Galvalume®: A corrosion-resistant sheet steel coating made from aluminum and zinc. Widely used in metal roofing panels for its durability.
- Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs): Panels that combine metal faces with foam insulation inside, offering both structural support and thermal performance.
- Mechanically Seamed Panel: A standing seam panel type that is crimped or folded together using a tool, creating a watertight seam. Often used on low-slope metal roofs.
- Non-Prorated Warranty: A warranty period during which the warranty doesn’t reduce in value over time. If a defect occurs, the full cost of repair or replacement is covered during the stated period.
- PBR Panel: (Purlin Bearing Rib) A popular type of through-fastened metal roofing panel with a raised rib profile and an additional purlin bearing leg for added strength. Commonly used on commercial and industrial buildings where durability and cost-efficiency matter more than appearance.
- PVDF Coating (Kynar 500®): A high-performance paint finish that resists fading and chalking. Often used on premium metal roofing panels.
- R-Panel: A widely used exposed-fastener roofing panel with a repeating ribbed profile, typically installed on metal buildings, barns, and warehouses. Lacks the added support leg of a PBR panel, but remains a standard choice for utility-grade applications.
- Retrofit Roofing System: A new roof system installed over an existing roof without removing the old one. Saves on labor and disposal costs by avoiding a roof tear-off.
- Roll-Forming Machine: A machine used to shape flat coils of metal into roofing panels, often on-site for precise panel lengths and fewer seams.
- Snap-Lock Panel: A standing seam panel that clicks into place without tools. Common on homes due to faster installation and guaranteed neat appearance.
- Standing Seam Panels: Roofing panels with raised vertical seams that interlock. They hide and protect the fasteners and offer a high-end look with excellent long-term weather resistance.
- Stone-Coated Steel: Steel panels coated with a layer of ceramic-coated mineral granules that make them look like asphalt shingles, shakes, or clay tiles. Combines strength with style.
- Through-Fastened Panels: Metal panels secured with screws that go straight through the panel surface. Durable and cost-effective but they don’t look as good and may experience leaks at the fasteners over time. Another term for exposed-fastener panels.
- Weathertightness Warranty: A guarantee that a roof will not leak, typically offered when the roof is installed by a certified contractor using manufacturer-approved installation methods.
List of the Best Metal Roofing Brands
The metal roofing manufacturers listed here are presented in alphabetical order. This isn’t a ranked list. As a roof consultant, I would have no problem specifying or recommending products from any of these companies. But also, just because a company isn’t listed here it doesn’t mean I think they make bad products. See my roofing manufacturers directory for a list of other major metal roofing manufacturers.

Nucor Corporation is the largest steel producer in the United States, and through its divisions it is also a major manufacturer of metal building products and roofing systems. While Nucor’s core business is steelmaking (producing beams, sheets, rebar, etc.), it entered the metal buildings industry in the 1980s and now operates Nucor Building Systems (NBS) and related groups that fabricate pre-engineered steel buildings. Nucor Building Systems has multiple plants across the country and over 3,000 Authorized Builders in its network. These authorized contractors design and erect Nucor’s custom-engineered buildings, which typically include secondary framing and a metal roofing system as part of the package. Nucor’s building packages commonly use standing seam metal roof panels or long-span through-fastened panels (like Nucor’s CFR or Classic Roof panel) that are designed for low slopes and large spans – ideal for warehouses, manufacturing plants, churches, and other large structures.
In addition to conventional building panels, Nucor (through acquisitions and partnerships) offers insulated metal roof panels and a variety of architecturally-focused products. For example, Nucor acquired companies like Metl-Span and CENTRIA’s insulated panel business, which means it can supply IMP roofing and wall systems for energy-efficient buildings. Nucor’s portfolio also includes steel roof deck (for commercial flat roof structures), joists, and metal truss systems – making it a one-stop steel solution for builders. Because Nucor is vertically integrated (from producing the coil steel to manufacturing the finished panels), it maintains strict quality control and typically provides strong warranty assurances. Galvalume metal roofs from Nucor carry up to a 25-year warranty against perforation, and painted panels come with long-term paint finish warranties (often 35 or 40 years for fade/chalk on standard PVDF finishes). NBS also offers weathertightness warranties on its roofing systems when installed by its Authorized Builders, giving owners confidence in the roof’s leak-free performance.
Nucor’s approach to the market is through partnership with independent contractors: Authorized Nucor Builders get technical support, engineering services, and custom building design software from Nucor. Nucor also runs a Contractor Installation Certification Program (CICP) to train and certify erectors in proper installation of its standing seam roofs and other components. As a massive corporation with vast resources, Nucor brings financial strength and R&D capabilities to the metal roofing industry – evidenced by innovations like higher-strength roofing panels and advanced roof coating technologies. For customers, Nucor’s involvement means access to high-quality steel roofing materials backed by one of the most stable companies in the sector, with the convenience of a nationwide builder network for installation.

PAC-CLAD also produces various exposed-fastener panels (like PAC-Corrugated and Rib Panels), flush/reveal wall panels, and even specialty stamped profiles such as the PAC-CLAD Precision Series® panels that can mimic shingles or tiles. In addition, Petersen is a major supplier of flat sheet and coil stock in PAC-CLAD finishes, which sheet metal contractors use to fabricate custom flashings and trim that perfectly match the roof panels. PAC-CLAD also produces various lines of perimeter edge metal – such as coping, fascia, and gutter systems – often used on commercial low-slope roofs regardless of the primary roofing material.
Petersen Aluminum was acquired by Carlisle Companies in 2019, joining a family of building product manufacturers while still operating under the PAC-CLAD brand. This corporate backing has further solidified its market presence. The company operates multiple manufacturing sites (Illinois, Georgia, Texas, Maryland, Arizona, Minnesota), allowing it to serve projects nationwide with relatively short lead times. While PAC-CLAD doesn’t require contractors to be formally certified to purchase its products, it does offer technical support, training resources, and has a technical rep network to ensure proper installation practices. Many experienced roofing contractors are very familiar with PAC-CLAD materials, as they are commonly used on schools, hospitals, offices, and high-end residential projects where longevity and appearance are a key concern. With its combination of top-tier finishes, product diversity, and a half-century track record, PAC-CLAD remains a top choice among the best metal roofing brands for architectural applications.
