Introduction

If you’re researching roofing materials or planning a roofing project, manufacturer websites are one of the most useful resources available. They offer detailed product data, pictures, specifications, installation guides, warranty information, and often additional guidance and advice regarding code compliance, energy efficiency, and application suitability.

Exploring these sites can help you get a sense of the different types of roofing products available and how you can use them. Many manufacturers provide before-and-after photos of completed installations, as well as in-progress images that show how their products are applied. Technical documents such as product data sheets, safety information, and construction details are typically available for viewing or download.

It’s important to remember that these websites are created by companies that are trying to sell you something. The information on these sites is helpful and typically very accurate, but keep in mind that these sites will often have a large amount of bias in favor of their own products.

The directory below is designed to help you find the roofing materials and products you’re looking for. Whether you are looking for asphalt shingles, metal panels, low-slope membranes, or specialty materials, this list can serve as a good starting point for your roofing research.

Choosing a Reputable Roofing Manufacturer is a Good Idea

Warranty Support: Trusted manufacturers typically offer strong warranties that cover material defects and, in some cases, workmanship (when installed by certified contractors). A solid warranty can give you peace of mind and may even improve the resale value of your home or building.

Technical Expertise: Established roofing manufacturers almost always have dedicated technical teams available to support installers, specifiers, and property owners. They will have technical departments that have the expertise to provide guidance on best practices for installation, maintenance, and repair, which can help you get the most out of your roof. You can just email them or call them up to get help. For free.

Certified Contractors: Leading manufacturers often work with a network of trained and approved contractors who are familiar with their specific products. They can help you find a qualified installer in your area. These certified installers can help ensure your roof is put in correctly according to manufacturer recommendations. Enhanced warranties are often available through certified contractors.

Product Innovation: Top-tier manufacturers invest in research and development to improve material performance, energy efficiency, and installation methods. This commitment to innovation results in better, longer-lasting roofing systems across all material types.

Standards & Compliance: A reputable roofing manufacturer ensures its products meet or exceed applicable industry standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements, giving you greater confidence in the system’s reliability and code compliance.

Choosing the right manufacturer is one of the most important things you can do to help a roofing project succeed. Whether you are installing a new roof or replacing an old one, the manufacturer you select will directly affect your roof’s long-term performance and value.

Clay & Concrete Roof Tile Manufacturers List

Clay and concrete roof tiles are two popular materials used in roofing because of their durability, classic look, and (for clay at least) millennia of exceptional performance as a roofing material. Their weight may them unsuitable for some structures.

Clay roof tiles are made from natural clay that is shaped and then fired in a kiln to harden. The process of making clay tiles can be traced back thousands of years and they are known for their longevity and distinctive appearance. Clay tiles are often associated with Mediterranean, Spanish, and Southwestern architectural styles. They come in a variety of shapes, including flat, S-shaped, and barrel tiles.

Concrete roof tiles are made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water. The mixture is molded under high pressure and then cured to form a hard and durable tile. Concrete tiles can mimic the appearance of clay tiles, as well as slate and wood shakes. Concrete roof tile is significantly cheaper and more widely-used today than clay tile.

Filter Fabric & Geotextile Manufacturers List

Filter fabric, also known as geotextile fabric, is a permeable material commonly made from woven or non-woven polyester or polypropylene fibers. It’s designed to allow water to pass through while preventing soil, sediment, and other environmental particles from doing so. In the context of roofing, filter fabric can serve a couple of different functions.

  1. Drainage Enhancement: Filter fabric is an important component of vegetative roof systems (green roofs). Placed beneath the top layers in roof gardens or green roofs, filter fabric helps to facilitate proper drainage, preventing clogs further down in the drainage system which would lead to water backing up, potentially causing structural damage to the roof.
  2. Protection Layer: Filter fabric is often used as a protective barrier over ballasted single-ply roof membranes, shielding them from damage due to foot traffic on the ballast stones (which can develop sharp edges) during installation and maintenance work.

Green Roof (Vegetative Roof Systems) Manufacturers List

Green roofs, also known as living roofs, eco-roofs, and, most technically, as vegetative roof systems, are roofing systems that are either partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, installed over a waterproofing membrane. Green roof systems are typically 4 to 8 inches thick and include components such as root barriers, drainage mats, filter fabric, and irrigation systems.

Gutter & Roof Drainage Component Manufacturers List

Rain gutters are narrow fabricated channels or troughs that are normally installed along the edges of roofs to catch and divert rainwater away from a building. They are part of a building’s “storm drainage” system, conveying water from the roof to a downspout, which takes the water to an appropriate discharge location away from the building. This helps protect the building’s structure and foundation from water damage.

Gutters are made from various materials, including aluminum (typically coated or painted), copper, steel (various types, typically coated or painted), vinyl (PVC), or zinc. You will even occasionally find gutters made out of wood (with a waterproof lining), although section 1502.3 of the International Building Code states that gutters must be made out of noncombustible materials.

Learn more about roof drainage components.

Insulation: Building Insulation Manufacturers List

Building insulation is a critical component in the construction of both residential and commercial structures. Insulation reduces heat transfer between the interior of a building and the external environment. The main goal of insulating a building is to improve the energy efficiency of a building, maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year while minimizing the amount of energy (and money) expended on heating and cooling. Optimal insulation can lead to significant energy savings. Insulation can also be used to reduce sound transmission through walls.

Insulation is typically installed inside of, within, or outside of the structural walls; above the ceiling, under the roof, and, on commercial buildings with flat roofs, within the roof system above the roof deck. The location and minimum required amount of insulation is set by the local building code.

Metal Roofing Manufacturers List

Metal roofing is any roofing system that uses metal panels or tiles as the primary roofing material. Metal roof systems have become an increasingly popular choice among homeowners due to its durability, longevity, and recyclability. Unlike other roofing materials that require frequent maintenance and replacement, metal roofing has an average lifespan of 40 to 60 years and can last up to 100 years with proper care.

There are several types of metal roofing, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits.

Steel roofing is the most commonly used type of metal roofing due to its affordability and strength. It is available in a range of colors and styles and can be easily customized to match any architectural style.

Aluminum roofing is another popular type of metal roofing. It’s lightweight and it doesn’t rust. It’s a good choice for coastal areas where salt in the air can cause significant damage to other roofing materials.

Copper roofing is also an excellent choice for its aesthetics, durability, and resistance to corrosion. It’s the most expensive metal roofing option but it can last up to 100 years or more.

Zinc roofing is also somewhat expensive, but also highly durable, resistant to corrosion, and provides a different look than copper.

There are several types of metal panels, such as ribbed panels or R-panels, corrugated panels, standing seam, flat seam, and so on, with panels also available in a wide range of sizes, colors, and finishes.

Roof Deck, Sheathing & Siding Manufacturers List

The roof deck is the foundational surface on which the roofing materials are installed. It is the flat supporting structure that spans the roof trusses or rafters, and it is the only structural part of a roof assembly. Roof decks can be made from a variety of materials, including plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), concrete, and steel.

Siding refers to the material applied to the exterior sides of a building or house, serving as the first line of defense against the elements. It can be made of wood, vinyl, fiber cement, metal, or other materials. While not a part of the roofing structure per se, siding plays a crucial role in protecting the building envelope and is often considered in conjunction with the roofing when designing for exterior protection in general.

Sheathing refers to the panels (usually made of plywood or OSB) that are fastened to the structural frame of a building, including the walls and the roof. Wall sheathing covers the studs and provides a uniform, solid surface for the installation of siding, windows, and doors. (Read more about the difference between sheathing and decking in roofing.)

Synthetic Composite Shingle Manufacturers List

Synthetic shingles and tiles are fairly recent developments among roofing materials. They are designed to look like traditional roofing materials like slate, clay, or cedar, but are made from engineered materials that mostly contain polymers such as synthetic rubber or plastic, or a combination of both. Synthetic shingles are also known as composite shingles, synthetic composite shingles, “imitation slate” or tile, or artificial shingles. (Note that “Composition” shingles are simply regular asphalt shingles and are another thing entirely.)

Skylight & Heat and Smoke Vent Manufacturers List

Skylights are a popular architectural feature used to allow more natural light into a building. They are typically installed on roofs and integrated with the roofing material. While improving interior aesthetics, they can also, in some climates, improve energy efficiency by reducing the use of artificial lighting. In colder climates, this is often outweighed by the heat loss commonly facilitated by skylights.

Heat and smoke vents are typically installed on the roofs of buildings in order to improve fire safety by allowing heat, smoke, and toxic gases to escape during a fire. They are often designed so they can also function as skylights. Their use and locations in a building are mandated by code. The use of heat and smoke vents helps to reduce damage to buildings in the event of a fire and facilitates safer evacuation routes and firefighting efforts. Heat and smoke vents are designed to either pop open or drop out in the event of a fire.

Because of how similar these products are, skylights and heat & smoke vents are often manufactured by the same companies.

Slate: Natural Slate Roofing Manufacturers List

Natural slate has been used as a roofing material for well over a thousand years. Slate forms from the metamorphosis of sedimentary rock under high pressure and temperature conditions. Its geological precursor is called shale, and the end product of these geological processes is a dense, durable, and naturally water-resistant stone that can be quarried, split, and processed into an excellent roofing material.

Spray Polyurethane Foam Manufacturers List

Spray (or sprayed) polyurethane foam is commonly referred to as “SPF”. It is an insulation, roofing, and air barrier material that is applied as a liquid spray which rapidly expands to form a solid, yellowish foam. It’s composed of two primary chemicals that react immediately when mixed together during the application process: a polyol resin and an isocyanate. When sprayed onto a surface using (very) specialized equipment, these chemicals produce a layer of extremely well-adhered polyurethane foam. When used as a roofing material, it requires a protective waterproof surface coating, preferably silicone.

Tensile Fabric Roofing Manufacturers List

Tensile fabric should be familiar to anyone who flies a lot and passes through major airports. It’s a popular material used to protect open areas like walkways, pick-up and drop-off locations, and long-term parking lots. Tensile fabric is an engineered material used to cover outdoor spaces without the need for a normal supporting structure (a building, in other words).

These fabrics are extremely lightweight and are created using woven fabric base layers, often made from polyester or fiberglass, which are coated with protective layers of PVC, PTFE (Teflon), or silicone. These compositions and formulations guarantee the strength, flexibility, and resistance to UV rays, moisture, and hail that is needed for a successful roofing material.

Thatch: Natural Thatch Producers List

Natural thatch refers to the use of plant stalks, reeds, or other similar organic materials to construct roofs for buildings. Natural thatch provides a comforting, traditional look, a supremely environmentally sustainable roof, and a very respectable roof service life.

Thatch: Synthetic Thatch Manufacturers List

Artificial thatch is a synthetic roofing material typically designed to look like tropical natural thatch made from palm leaves, reeds, or rushes. It is commonly used as decorative roofing on tropically-themed establishments such as resorts, beach restaurants, and tiki bars.

Synthetic thatch is usually manufactured using molded or extruded high-density polyethylene (plastic). Synthetic thatch is not normally intended to be fully waterproof and is used more for the atmosphere it helps create than for its function as a roofing material, while the actual functional part of the roof is the membrane underlayments installed on roof sheathing beneath the thatch.

TPO Roofing Manufacturers List

TPO is the most popular single-ply roof membrane in the United States today. TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, is heat-weldable and extremely UV-resistant. TPO is typically the least expensive of the three major types of single-ply roof membrane in use today (EPDM, PVC, and TPO). The heat-welded seams in a TPO roof system are exceptionally strong. Unlike EPDM, a TPO roof does not rely on adhesives. And unlike PVC, TPO does not rely on plasticizers to maintain flexibility over the life of the roof.

Underlayment: Roof Underlayment Manufacturers List

Roof underlayment is a protective material applied in rolls/sheets directly on the roof deck beneath the main roofing material (whether shingles, tiles, or metal panels). Roof underlayment is typically required by code for most types of pitched roofing. Underlayment can serve different purposes, functioning as an air barrier or vapor barrier, as protection against ice dams, and as a secondary water barrier. Its primary purpose is to provide an additional layer of protection against water infiltration.

Ventilation: Roof Vent Manufacturers List

Roof ventilation products are essential to a properly-installed pitched roofing system. The various types of roof vents are designed to facilitate the exchange of indoor and outdoor air, thereby helping to maintain a healthy and energy-efficient home. Proper attic ventilation keeps both the attic and the roof from overheating, preventing shingle damage; it reduces condensation and the moisture buildup that can lead to mold, helps prevent ice dams, and makes it more unlikely that the roofing materials will fail prematurely.

Waterproofing: Construction Waterproofing Manufacturers

Construction waterproofing refers to the materials and systems used in the process of making a building resistant to water infiltration. Construction waterproofing helps maintain the integrity of the structure and the prevention of damage due to water intrusion. Construction waterproofing is generally considered to be distinct from roofing, and typically refers to below-grade or at-grade waterproofing that specifically protects parts of a building that are below the level of the roof, such as exterior walls, basements, foundations, and retaining walls.
