How Much Do Different Types of Pavers Weigh?
The weight of a paver depends on the dimensions of the paver, the type of material used to make it, and the manufacturer’s formulation of that material. Stone pavers made from the same type of stone can also vary in weight somewhat depending on which quarry the stone came from.
For example, concrete pavers with the same dimensions can vary in weight by up to 25% depending on the concrete mix used to make them. But in general:
Concrete pavers that are 1 inch thick weigh about 12 pounds per square foot.
Brick pavers that are 1 inch thick weigh about 10 pounds per square foot.
Rubber pavers that are 1 inch thick weigh about 3 pounds per square foot.
Stone pavers that are 1 inch thick weigh about 12 -14 pounds per square foot.

This paver weight calculator uses the values from the paver weight chart below, which were derived from the sources listed at the bottom of the page.

Why is the Weight of Pavers Important?
Pavers are a common source of added weight on roofs. Whether used for walkways, patios, plaza decks, or ballast weight on loose-laid roof membranes, the weight of pavers can add up. It’s important to know how much it’s adding up to.
Different roofs are designed to support different amounts of weight per square foot, and you need to know how much of that structural support capacity is being used up by the weight of pavers.
Square Footage of Individual Pavers
Pavers come in many sizes other than a simple 12 inches by 12 inches (one square foot).
To calculate the square foot area of an individual paver, multiply its length in inches by its width in inches. Divide the result by 144 (the number of square inches in a square foot). The result is the area of the paver in square feet.
To make it easier to use this chart, here are the surface areas of some common paver dimensions in square feet:
- 3.625 inches x 8 inches = 0.20 square feet (standard brick)
- 4 inches x 7.75 inches = 0.215 square feet
- 7 inches x 7 inches = 0.34 square feet
- 10.5 inches x 7 inches = 0.51 square feet
- 12 inches x 12 inches = 1 square foot
- 12 inches x 24 inches = 2 square feet
- 18 inches x 18 inches = 2.25 square feet
- 16 inches x 24 inches = 2.66 square feet
- 18 inches x 24 inches = 3 square feet
- 24 inches x 24 inches = 4 square feet
About This Paver Weight Chart
I decided to put together a quick reference chart so I could look up the weight of the pavers typically used in plaza deck roofing systems or as ballast on loose-laid single-ply membrane roof systems.
The resulting chart was pretty short, so I decided to expand it by adding paver weights for every type of paver I could think of (and I later added the paver weight calculator above which uses these weights).
Since the table gives weights by the square foot, it basically tells you how much a 12″ x 12″ paver weighs for each type of material at their typical thicknesses. It should be pretty easy to calculate paver weight for different square footages this way.
Most of these weights were taken directly from manufacturer technical data sheets and are the actual weights of specific, representative products. In some cases, the weights I give were calculated using more general manufacturer data, or taken from a non-manufacturer source that I consider authoritative.
In all cases, these values are meant to provide a general idea of what pavers weigh, and should not be used if precise values are needed for critical engineering calculations.
When precision is necessary, always refer to the data sheets of the actual, specific product you intend to use, or contact the technical department of the paver manufacturer.
